Evangelia Kindinger: Reading Supernatural Fiction as Regional Fiction: Of \u201cVamps,\u201d \u201cSupes\u201d and Places that \u201cSuck\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Bon Temps, Forks, Tulsa: recent vampire fiction has transformed these apparently \u201coff-the-map\u201d and rural places to sites of supernatural adventures and exotic characters. If \u201cthe monster exists only to be read,\u201d if it is \u201can embodiment of a certain cultural moment \u2013 of a time, a feeling, and a place\u201d (Cohen, Monster Culture 4), then we need to read the places in which vampires are narrated. In this paper, I argue that authors such as Stephenie Meyer, Charlaine Harris and P.C. and Kristin Cast tell regional vampire tales, rooting the cultural figure \u201cvampire\u201d in specific regional settings that result in the vampires‘ domestication and Americanization.<\/p>\n
